Abstract
The sustained increase in foreign population that Chile has experienced for more than two decades due to migratory flows has a special importance in the educational context by the incorporation of an increasing number of immigrant students in the classrooms. Reality that makes even more visible the social and cultural diversity present since always and increasing since the last time in the educational space. In this article, we analyze, through a bibliographical review, the limitations that underlie the intercultural approach in the PEIB, to respond to the problems of education in the context of social and cultural diversity. We maintain that the intercultural sense present in the intercultural education policy developed by the Chilean State does not foster a broad social and cultural diversity approach that allows the presence of other societies, cultures and languages present within the same territory to be made visible. The case of the immigrant population, being reduced to the 'indigenous population' as a way to respond to their demands and not to the interrelation between the different cultures present in the country. We conclude that the sense of interculturality in the PEIB is something to be built, rather than built
