The following study investigated the development of the syllable structure of complex onsets (CC) in a group of speakers of the Chilean variety of the Spanish language. The sample consisted of 9 subjects (between 1.6 and 2.8 years old), which were interviewed in their homes (in Chile) during a period of 6 months and in presence of their parents or very close relatives. A total amount of 354 words containing CC were transcribed. Of these words 147 are /C+l/ and 207 /C+r/. Only spontaneous utterances were considered. It has been observed sistematicity in the identification of three states of acquisition: 1st a stage of reduction of the CC to one element which uses to correspond to the less voiced element. 2nd a stage of semiconsonantization of the second element of the CC. 3rd a stage of faithful production of the CC. Among the main results the low percentage of faithful production of the syllables with complex onsets (CCV) stands out and the instead universal syllable structure (CV) in most cases. It has also been observed a high percentage of maintenance of the first element in the output of the complex onsets; nevertheless specific complex onsets - /dr/ and /gl/ - showed the maintenance of the second element in many cases.
