The present article analyzes the phenomenon of utopia in contemporary Latin American catastrophist literature through a detailed account of the spatial representation of the territory in the Argentinian novel El ano del desierto (2012) by Pedro Mairal, particularly tackling the changes that happen within it as a result of the catastrophe. In this analysis, we posit that the utopian condition of the devastated territory is not conceptual, but rather functional, and that it focuses on experiences of mobility, deterritorialization, reterritorialization and multiterritoriality that uncover the different ways in which space evolves and the different possibilities of inhabiting such a space.
