dc.description.abstract	En el contexto de la religiosidad vinculadas a los terremotos del Reino de Guatemala, fueron varios los santos invocados por las comunidades para lidiar con el azote sísmico. En particular, destaca la devoción hacia san Emigdio, un santo mártir celebrado en las fuentes hagiográficas por su labor como obispo de Ascoli, en Italia, y que desde 1703 se venera como protector celestial contra los fenómenos telúricos. Este artículo pretende explorar, analizando la documentación de archivo y las fuentes visuales de la época, aspectos vinculados con el origen y la promoción de este culto en la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII, cuando Emigdio se consagró como protector oficial de Ciudad de Guatemala. La producción figurativa atestigua el fermento devocional hacia este santo, especialmente mediante pinturas de mediano formato localizadas en iglesias, museos y colecciones privadas. El análisis de las diversas representaciones del santo que se han podido rastrear ha revelado una coherencia en la apariencia iconográfica, basada en un modelo común codificado entre Nápoles y España. Se trata de una primera aproximación a la historia de esta devoción, que sigue una tendencia también compartida en otros territorios americanos amenazados por los terremotos.
dc.description.abstracten	In the field of the religiosity linked to the earthquakes in the King-dom of Guatemala, several saints were invoked by the communities to deal with the seismic scourge. Among them, there is St Emygdius, a martyr saint celebrated in hagiographic sources for his work as bishop of Ascoli, in Italy, and venerated since 1703 as a heavenly protector against telluric phenomena, is particularly noteworthy. This article aims to explore, by analyzing archival do-cumentation and visual sources of the period, aspects linked to the origin and promotion of this cult in the second half of the 18th century, when Emigdio was consecrated as the official protector of Ciudad de Guatemala. Figurative production reflects the devotional enthusiasm for this saint, especially in the medium-sized paintings found in churches, museums and private collections. A survey of the various representations of the saint that have been found has revealed a certain coherence in the iconographic appearance, based on a com-mon model codified between Naples and Spain. This is a first approximation to the history of this devotion, which follows a pattern also shared in other American territories frequently threatened by earthquakes.
