| dc.description.abstract | Soil water content is a key factor in the climate-soil-vegetation system. Climate and weather conditions define the amount of water and energy available, impacting the evapotranspiration process. The objective was evaluating the effect of soil water content on soil temperature and heat storage in a drip-irrigated potato crop (Solanum tuberosum L. Puyehue INIA ) subjected to deficit irrigation conditions. A study was carried out at the Research Center Carillanca (INIA), La Araucanía Region, Chile (38°41 S, 72°24 W, 188 m a.s.l.) during the maximum atmospheric evaporative demand period of the 2020/2021 season. Three different irrigation levels (IL) were implemented: IL1 (full irrigation), IL2 (75% of IL1) and IL3 (60% of IL1). For each IL, a set of five frequency domain reflectometry probes were installed for continuous measurements of volumetric soil water content during the growing season. Measurements of net radiation, soil heat flux and soil temperature were also conducted, and soil heat storage calculated. The results showed that increased soil water content decreased the soil temperature provoking a higher heat storage capacity increasing the soil heat storage. The higher values of soil heat storage were found close to noon, while the maximum soil temperature values were observed between 17:00-19:00 h. Thus, increases in the values of soil heat storage can potentially influence the available energy, affecting the evapotranspiration process. Finally, the change of soil water content throughout the season under water-limited conditions could alter the plant/tuber growth rate and yield due to the modification of plant microclimate. © 2024 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved. | |
