Two central ideas are discussed in this article. Firstly, the intellectual debate in the field of Chilean art concerning the existence of a 'Chilean school of painting'. Secondly, the accepted thesis of the existence of a 'Chilean school of landscape'. A 'tradition' of landscape painting has clearly emerged within Chilean art, in which the work of Antonio Smith constitutes a key moment in its consolidation.
