Abstract
This paper explores the subnational political patterns in Chile, based on the differences between intermediate cities and metropolitan areas. Data from the Lapop Survey of 2014 were processed with SPSS, generating results for univariate descriptive data. The paper tests the hypothesis that intermediate cities present different types of political cultures from metropolitan areas. While intermediate cities are expected to be more authoritarian and state-dependent, metropolitan areas are expected to be mostly indifferent to democracy and individualistic. The hypothesis is rejected, since in both intermediate cities and metropolitan areas there are conditions of authoritarianism, but with different characteristics, one derived from the processes of construction of a national welfare state and another depositary of the emergency conditions of Commodification of public services. The paper finds an authoritarian dualism, which hinders conditions for the reproduction and defense of democracy.
