Hydrodynamic study of stabilization ponds implemented in the rural environment of the panamerican zone of Merida State, Venezuela

Abstract
The Venezuelan State, through national and state government entities, has built a series of sanitation works to create the sanitary conditions required to boost rural endogenous development. In the specific case of the Pan American Zone of the State of Merida, there are about ten pond ystems in operation, which are studied in this work to observe and analyze its hydrodynamic performance. Using a Model based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (MIKE 21), flow conditions are simulated, respecting input and output configurations, in the representative pond systems of Cano Seco and Cano Amarillo. Depending on the results obtained, it is evident in both ponds that the entry conditions are the same and, therefore, the hydrodynamics is very similar. The output conditions are different and it is clear that the output condition of Cano Amarillo generates more appropriate hydrodynamic patterns, in terms of flow direction and speeds. The current direction pattern, for the configuration of the Cano Seco pons, corresponds to a flow dynamic that facilitates mixing, observing recirculation zones and convergent flows. The observed pattern for Cano Amarillo has less presence of areas of convergent flows and recirculation; therefore, the flow direction pattern, in this case, is less like a mixing dynamic. It is recommended to carry out a Hydrodynamic Study aimed at making modifications in the input and output conditions of the prototypes studied, to improve their hydrodynamics.
